Dance

Whether a student comes to Lyndon Institute after years of dance instruction or wants to learn to dance the school offers classes and after-school clubs to meet their needs and interests.  There is beginning and intermediate ballet, modern dance, jazz and hip hop.  The dance studio in the historic Lyndon Town House is large and sunny with moveable ballet barres and full-length mirrors.

Visiting artists supplement traditional classes with the perspective and techniques of dancers who have had professional experience with leading companies.

  • Dina Danielson's week of classes give students the chance to work with a dancer trained by members of the Martha Graham Dance Company.
  • Steve Shannon, a 2006 LI graduate who is now a member of a professional hip hop company, holds workshops in this contemporary dance form.
  • The annual Vermont State Dance Festival brings hundreds of students and teachers to the LI campus.  The 2007 festival included workshops on Chinese dance and classical ballet as well as sessions on Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art and dance, and African dance by the Jeh Kulu's Dance and Drumming Company.

During the winter, Lyndon Institute's dance students travel to 15 area elementary and middle schools to educate students about the elments of dance.  They teach dance combinations to the students who perform their dances for the rest of the school.

The department offers a newsletter with updates on its programs.
