Lyndon Institute competes in Vermont’s Division II football league, fielding both Varsity and Junior Varsity teams to ensure every student-athlete has the opportunity to play and grow in the sport. Our season runs from early August through mid-November, featuring eight regular-season games with the potential for three playoff matchups.

The LI football program has a proud tradition of success, having captured four state championships (1921, 1933, 1966, and 1997). Most recently, in 2013, we were League Champions and State Runners-Up. Beyond our on-field achievements, we are especially proud of our deep-rooted culture of school spirit and community involvement.

One of the cornerstones of this tradition is our historic rivalry with St. Johnsbury Academy. Known as “The Big Game,” this matchup has been played nearly every year since 1894, making it one of the oldest high school football rivalries in the nation. The event continues to draw thousands of fans annually, bringing together alumni, families, and community supporters.

In 2025, LI welcomed Colin Wells as our new Head Coach. Entering his 21st year of coaching, Coach Wells began his career at Hopatcong High School in his hometown of Hopatcong, NJ.  He went on to Tennessee in 2012, where he was a coach at Oakland Middle School, Franklin High School, and Nolensville High School. Throughout his career, Wells has served in various roles, including high school Defensive Coordinator, DBs coach, ILB coach, OLB coach, RBs coach, QBs coach, WRs coach, and middle school Head Coach. His experience and leadership bring a new energy to LI football, as he builds on our proud history and looks toward an even stronger future.
