LI Announces the Class of 2025 Valedictorian and Salutatorian

Lyndon Institute Head of School Dr. Brian Bloomfield is pleased to announce the valedictorian and salutatorian for the Lyndon Institute Class of 2025.

Valedictorian

The valedictorian of the graduating class at Lyndon Institute is the student who receives the highest weighted grade point average during their tenure at the school. The student to realize that accomplishment for the Class of 2025 is Timothy Tester. In his role as valedictorian, Tim will present the valedictory address during the school’s commencement ceremonies in June.

Consistently modeling excellence as a student, athlete, and leader, Tim has been deeply involved in all aspects of school life. Social Studies teacher Kathy Smith, who has worked with Tim in multiple roles, shared, "Regardless of the role—student, fellow traveler, leader, or athlete—Tim is consistently true to himself, kind to all, hardworking, and thoughtful. As much as Tim has to be proud of, he is the first to point out how he can improve. It is this drive that has earned Tim the honor of Valedictorian, and it has been rightfully earned."

Academically, Tim is known for his intellectual curiosity and unwavering work ethic, regardless of the discipline. English teacher Richard McCarthy notes that, while clearly a focused and determined student, Tim does not take himself too seriously, claiming, "Tim is energized by questions that help him piece together a complex understanding of ideas. His willingness to shift from serious to silly and back again helps foster his playful, comfortable approach to the classroom." Math teacher Kevin Hickey praises Tim’s talents, stating, "Tim has had a remarkable high school career. I have seen him excel in the classroom and on the track team. He has impressed me with his intellectual ability, motivation, and work ethic."

Tim has participated in Student Government for four years, most recently holding the role of Student Body President, as well as in several clubs and organizations and is currently President of Lyndon Institute’s chapter of the National Honor Society. Whether organizing school-wide events, supporting teammates, or volunteering beyond campus, Tim approaches service with humility and purpose, setting a powerful example of responsible and involved citizenship. A dedicated athlete, Tim has served as captain of both the Cross Country and Track and Field teams, and is also an accomplished swimmer. Coach Jack Harris commends Tim’s leadership on the track team, noting, "Tim has been an outstanding Captain and role model for two years. His work ethic is second to none."

Tim has established himself as a dedicated student who expects the best of himself while inspiring the best in others. As such, he has earned recognition in a variety of forms from several organizations outside of LI, including Dartmouth College, Norwich University, and the University of Vermont, while also participating in several opportunities through West Point, the United States Naval Academy, and the Governor’s Institute of Vermont. Tim’s willingness to embrace a broad range of experiences speaks to his eagerness to explore new perspectives and challenge himself beyond the classroom.

Tim Tester embodies the values of Lyndon Institute through his commitment to academics, leadership, and service. As Kathy Smith remarks, "Tim is a true Viking—seeking his next adventure while holding fast to the values of respect and responsibility he learned at home. I have no doubt that he will tackle his next challenges with the same commitment and drive, sense of humor, and genuine care for each opportunity he encounters."

Tim will attend University of Edinburgh and study international relations. He is the son of Loralee and Shawn Tester of Lyndonville, Vermont.

Salutatorian

The salutatorian of the graduating class at Lyndon Institute is the student who has earned the second highest weighted grade point average during their time at the school. The student to realize that accomplishment for the Class of 2025 is Macey Mawhinney. In her role as salutatorian, Macey will present the invocation address during the school’s baccalaureate ceremony in June.

A standout student, athlete, and musician, Macey exemplifies Lyndon Institute’s mission through her academic excellence, artistic achievement, and leadership in and out of the classroom. Whether on the track, in rehearsal rooms, or during classroom discussions, she leads by example—motivating others through her dedication, positive energy, and collaborative spirit. “Macey is a wonderful combination of what it looks like to be bright and curious,” says English teacher Richard McCarthy. “While she does not exactly shy away from sharing her ideas with the whole class, her impact is best seen and heard in small group discussions. By sharing her insights on a text and asking her classmates questions, Macey elevates simple classroom exchanges into moments of understanding and clarity and, most often, thoughtful appreciation.” She is frequently described as someone who listens deeply, engages meaningfully, and contributes to the culture of excellence at Lyndon Institute.

Macey’s academic record is distinguished by her membership in both the National Honor Society and Lyndon Institute’s Athletic Honor Society. In her junior year, she earned the prestigious AP Scholar Award with Honors, recognizing her outstanding performance on Advanced Placement exams. Additionally, Macey is a dedicated three-season athlete, competing in track and field, indoor track, and cross country. Her drive, advocacy, and sportsmanship have made her a respected member of LI’s athletic community.

In addition to her academic and athletic pursuits, Macey has made a lasting impact on the school’s music program. “What an honor it has been to work with Macey, first as a Caledonia Children’s Chorus member during her elementary school years, and now, at LI,” says Susanne Norwood, Vocal and Instrumental Music Director. “She has auditioned and been accepted each year in high school to the District II Music Festival, Vermont’s All-State Music Festival, and the New England Music Festival.” Macey is only one of two LI students to receive this honor all four years of high school.

Macey was accepted into the highly selective New England Music Festival Honor Choir, a testament to her skill and dedication as a vocalist. She has performed as a soprano in LI Voices and the Select Chorus, as a keyboard percussionist in the Stage Band, and was a longtime member of the Kingdom All-Stars.

“Macey brings a playfulness and joy to everything she does,” Norwood adds. “Her passion for music is infectious, and her contributions to LI’s music program will be remembered for years to come.”

Macey will attend the University of Vermont where she will pursue her interest in growing as a musician, writer, and athlete. She is the daughter of Lorrie and Brian Mawhinney of Lyndonville, Vermont.
